A major step in the development of Bendigo Health’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) journey has been put in place, with contracts signed, Sláinte Healthcare will deliver a customised Digital Medical Record using Vitro for the health service.  The Digital Medical Record system will deliver images and patient information electronically and will work with other, existing, Bendigo Health systems such as their patient administration system, and will be able to generate reports. This will reduce duplication of information and is the beginning of their journey to eliminate paper medical records.

Sláinte Healthcare wins fourth Australian contract

Sláinte Healthcare said today that it has won a contract with Bendigo Health, a 653-bed teaching hospital in Regional Victoria that conducts more than 300,000 treatments a year.

The contract will see Sláinte Healthcare implementing its Vitro software as the digital medical record within the new US$630m hospital development and will pave the way for a paperless hospital in Bendigo in less than 12 months.

It’s the company’s fourth contract win in Australia and follows the establishment of paperless hospitals at Calvary Health Care and a paperless chart at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Centre in New South Wales.

To date, Sláinte Healthcare has partnered with and implemented its software in more than 53 hospitals in Ireland, including Beacon and St James’s Hospitals.

The digital medical record at Bendigo will enable clinicians to complete clinical documentation on mobile devices anywhere in the new hospital; improving data quality, ensuring easier access to clinical information and providing decision support to clinicians and staff. The system will integrate with administrative and clinical systems at the hospital providing a consolidated view of patient information at the point of care.

An Irish Healthcare firm has won a huge contract in Australia to convert medical records into digital form.

Sláinte Healthcare yesterday announced its fourth contract deal with Bendigo Health, a teaching hospital in Regional Victoria. Bendigo Health to roll out Vitro for digital medical record

Victoria's Bendigo Health has chosen Slainte Healthcare's Vitro software as the digital medical record (DMR) component of its overall electronic medical record (EMR) project.

Bendigo Health will begin implementing Vitro immediately to begin the process of digitising Bendigo Hospital's paper-based processes and forms, with the roll-out expected to be complete in less than 12 months.

Bendigo Hospital is currently undergoing a $630 million redevelopment, which will see a new 372-bed hospital built adjacent to the existing hospital along with an 80-bed psychiatric unit, 72 same day beds and an integrated cancer centre. A conference centre, helipad and 128-room hotel will then be constructed on the existing site when the new hospital is complete.

Vitro has the capability to work as an electronic patient chart, replicating paper forms digitally and linking with other electronic systems such as the patient administration system. Bendigo Health's executive director of information services, Bruce Winzar, said this will reduce duplication of information and is the beginning of the health service's journey to eliminate paper medical records.

“The new hospital has been designed to be paper light upon opening and in order to achieve this we must implement an EMR, of which the digital medical record is a key part,” Mr Winzar said.

“This means clinicians will be able to view any paper forms or patient medical records via an electronic device anywhere in the new hospital via a single clinical portal.”

Slainte Healthcare's commercial director, Jeff Smoot, said the software had the capability to be implemented rapidly with quick user adoption.

Vitro has been implemented as the electronic patient chart at Calvary's Bethlehem Hospital in Melbourne and is also being rolled out to 11 other hospitals in the group. It is also used as a paperless chart at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse cancer centre in Sydney.
